Clients are wanting more return on their cash investments. What vehicles are advisors using for cash investments now?

Cash is cash. If they want immediate access, then cash it is. Otherwise you can look at short term CD's or T-bills. Both pay much less than 1%.
Anything more than that brings some level of risk.

....and illiquidity...so it ain't "cash" no more.
