Portfolio Presentation question

Postby Weemery » Thu Aug 11, 2011 7:13 am

Sorry for not posting under the Software thread but it seems a bit "stale". Here's my question...I have 6 models that I've built, but need a simple 1-2 page way to present the hypothetical past performance. I do NOT want to show what each fund/ETF did in the past, but the portfolio as a whole. Does Morningstar have what I need, or could someone make a recommendation? My clients will want the pretty pie chart, 1,3,5,10 yr. avg returns, beta, etc...

Many thanks,
Weemery, CFP.

No idea whether you can do this w/Morningstar - I don't use it - but just a heads-up that there's a bunch of specific regulatory requirements around presenting model portfolio performance data. You probably know that but to me that part is much tricker than finding the data.

Morningstar will do the 10 year Hypo for your portfolios.......in most cases. The disclaimers that follow will take 4 pages.............so there is no way to do it in 1-2 pages. I use Morningstar daily and they do a nice job with the "back-testing" of portfolios. Be careful to insure the investments are at least as old as the hypothetical time frame (3yr, 5yr, etc.). If not, they will not show accurately. Many newer ETF's do not have a long enough track record for true "back-testing".
