Robert W. Baird has hired Morgan Stanley Smith Barney Complex Director Steven W. Stroker and also made five internal promotions within its private wealth management team.

Stroker joins Baird as a regional director in Chicago, where he will oversee Baird’s wealth management offices in Indiana, Ohio, Michigan and most of Illinois. In his former position at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, Stroker led 10 branch offices including more than 220 financial advisors and $17 billion in client assets. Stroker started his career at Smith Barney as a financial consultant in 1983.

Baird has also made several other promotions in its private wealth management business. John Mabee, who served as a managing director, now serves as vice chairman of private wealth management. Mabee joined Baird in 1994, and has held other positions at the firm including regional director, branch manager and financial advisor.

Matthew S. Curley, managing director, has been promoted to national sales director and chief operating officer. Curley most recently served as a regional director at Baird, and rejoined the firm in 2006 from Smith Barney.

William T. Johnson, senior vice president, has been named regional director. In that role, Johnson will lead offices in Florida, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Virginia.

Paul McWane, senior vice president and senior investment consultant, will take over Johnson’s previous role leading the firm’s Lynchburg, Va., wealth management office.

Kimberly Thekan has been named senior vice president of talent acquisition and integration. Thekan joined Baird in 2008 as a private wealth management business partner.

Milwaukee-based Baird operates asset management, capital markets, private equity and wealth management businesses. The firm has offices in the U.S., Europe and Asia.
