As part of a strategy to expand nationally, Jackson National Life Insurance Co announced it will establish a regional headquarters in Franklin, Tenn.

The Lansing, Mich., based unit of London’s Prudential plc said the office in the Nashville suburb would employ 400 people.

“Jackson's business model is founded upon efficiency and low expenses, so any decision we make to expand our workforce is never taken lightly,” said Clark Manning, Jackson’s president and chief executive officer. "Given Jackson's rapid growth, which resulted in record total sales and deposits last year, and our expectations for future growth opportunities, we must proactively expand."

Jackson also plans to hire an additional 50 to 100 people in Lansing and expand its office capacity to accommodate a total of 2,100 employees.

Jackson generated total sales and deposits of $15.2 billion1 and net income of $670 million last year. Total sales and deposits rose 8% from a year earlier, primarily due to a 55% increase in variable annuity sales to $10 billion.

In Tennessee, the company plans to house operations, information technology, distribution, human resources, facitlities and administrative personnel. It has entered into a long-term lease to occupy 150,000 square feet of office space. Beginning in January, it will occupy 90,000 square feet and plans to add 30,000 in January 2012 and another 30,00 in the middle of 2013. This will give the company the capacity for a total of 750 employees.

"The Nashville area has a large and well-educated workforce and is home to many institutions of higher learning," said Mike Well, a vice chairman and chief operating officer for Jackson. "With several insurance and financial services companies located in and around Nashville, we expect to be able to quickly attract experienced, qualified job candidates."

Currently, Jackson had 3,700 employees in offices in Lansing, Denver, Chicago, Santa Monica, Calif., New York, Roseland, N.J., Tampa, Atlanta, Appleton, Wis., and Bismarck, N.D.
