Do you have any children in their 20s or 30s? I do, and a big conversation occurred in an early Thanksgiving celebration. Not only are my daughter and son-in-law both very "green," his brother and wife are even greener. They will take scraps of food, normally relegated to the garbage or garbage disposal, and walk them 9 blocks to Central Park in NYC for composting. Socially responsible investing appeals to these groups(Gen X, Gen Y, and Millennials) and that is where smart advisors need to have an expertise if they expect to gather clients in these groups. This is just one more reason to attract younger Advisors into the profession. And if you can find them, and there are ways, make those new advisors women. You will then leverage your practice with multiple bonuses in the Know, Like, Trust relationships you have with your older clients and the new, socially responsible younger generation. 1. Attract more of their offspring 2. Keep these new clients when older clients pass assets at their death. 3. Get an advisor that establishes great rapport and digs deep into the motivation of all clients. 4. An Earth that will sustain it's people in an environmentally responsible manner. There are many ways you can get yourself involved in socially responsible companies. You can invest in individual companies that qualify as socially responsible, purchase a mutual fund that is committed to only investing in socially responsible companies or purchase an exchange traded fund.
